One of the easiest sewing projects you can do, while making a super useful item to promote relaxation and help ease tension and aches.
Reusable rice bag compress
Step 1: Cut two rectangles of fabric equal in size, 15 in x 6 in
Step 2: Put the two pieces of fabric together so that they are even in shape, with the print side together. I always like to use a couple pins to keep the fabric in place as I sew around the edges.
Step 3: Sew the two pieces of fabric together, around the edge of the rectangles (about half inch from the edges) but leaving about two inches open, unsewn (shown below in the middle/top of the fabric).
Step 4: Turn your sewn rectangle inside out (so that the exterior is now outwards). Use your fingers to gently poke out the corners so that they are less rounded.
Step 5: In a bowl, add a few drops of essential oils to plain white rice and mix. I used about 5-6 cups of rice and about 20-25 drops of essential oils. I kind of just eye-balled the size of my fabric and a measuring cup. I like to let the rice sit in a sealed container for a couple hours so it can soak up the oils. I suggest using lavender and peppermint (I did about 10-12 drops each) but any relaxing oil or oil blend will work!
Step 6: Fill with rice into the opening, allowing some room for it to move around.
Step 7: Fold the edges of the opening into each other, then sew shut. You can always hand sew it shut, as it can be challenging to maneuver the rice with your sewing machine.
And that is it! So easy!
TIPS:
You can hand-sew or use a sewing machine. I would also recommend using a flame resistant material or natural material like cotton.
HOW TO USE:
This rice bag can be warmed up in the microwave or kept in the fridge/freezer for a cold compress! When using as a heating pad, heat at 20 second intervals, keeping an eye on the bag in the microwave. Any fabric is flammable if heated too much.
I think this is an amazing handmade gift and I suggest pairing it with a couple of essential oil rollers! Check out my DIY gifting blog post for the recipes.
