All the Fall Things

Amanda Perry

It’s that time of year when you may be tempted by all those fall candle scents. That was me, once upon a time! I got so excited for all those scents and STOCKED THE HECK UP. It took many, many years for me to learn about the toxicity of candles. I mean, why would companies make products that can be damaging to our homes and bodies??

Candles release toxins into the air that contribute to indoor air pollution and are considered just as dangerous as secondhand smoke. The chemicals in candles can cause damage to the liver, brain, and central nervous system. Not only that, but the fragrance in candles can cause or exacerbate issues like asthma, respiratory infections, allergies, decreased lung function, endocrine disruption, fertility issues, inflammatory response, and cancer.

Fragrance is a chemical by nature, as it is a compound made in a lab containing thousands of chemical ingredients. And a legal loophole considers it a proprietary ingredient, so companies do not have to disclose what is truly in it.

It took me way too long to learn those things. But that’s why I turn to essential oils now. Plus the diffusers are just such a dreamy addition to my home. I know candles give that cozy vibe, but diffusers can too!

Another good thing about essential oils is that you can create whatever fall blend you feel like that day! And in the long term, they are far more cost effective as you can stock a few oils, only use a few drops, and have endless blend combinations.

Alternatives

Here are also some easy swaps that make JUST as heavenly a scent when these oils are interchanged.

The spices:

Cinnamon bark, cassia, clove, and nutmeg are all a bit different but you can easily swap them out for one another and get just as lovely a scent!

The trees:

Pine, northern lights black spruce, Idaho blue spruce, and Idaho grand fir can also be swapped out to make amazing blends!

*I will say cedarwood is quite different, it’s more of a wood scent.

Citrus:

Orange and tangerine are very close and can be interchanged. Grapefruit is a little lighter but you can also still use orange as an alternate for a good scent pairing. Bergamot is a citrus oil but it definitely has a more spicy scent. Pretty much all citrus oils are amazing in my opinion.

Diffuser Hack

My absolute favorite hack to quickly creating these diffuser blends is making a few of my favorites in large batches in dropper bottles. I definitely suggest trying it with any blends that take quite a few different oils! You will have it pre-prepared and not have to pull out so many oils to mix your favorite blend. I usually do 10 times the recipe into a dropper bottle. And I can use however many drops of that blend are necessary for the space I'm in. If I'm in a big room, I'll use 8-9 drops and if I'm in a small room, I'll use 3-4 drops. Sometimes it's not possible to make these blends for smaller spaces because of the oil and drop counts, but making a large batch in a dropper bottle makes that possible!

MORE Fall Recipes

Ok, so I said ALL the fall things. So I want to give you a few other recipes here to get you really into the spirit of things. If you are as obsessed with this season as I am, I know you will enjoy them!

Earth & Hand household cleaner - pretty much fall in a bottle

1-2 capfuls of Thieves Household Cleaner

10 drops bergamot eo

10 drops pine eo

5 drops orange eo

5 drops cassia eo

Top with distilled water in a 16 oz glass spray bottle

Use this general, all-purpose cleaner for most surfaces in your home! And inhale all the good scents that plant juice provides. You can make your household cleaner smell like anything you want using essential oils; those brands at the store don’t own the rights to dreamy cleaner scents. You can cut out the harmful fragrance right in your own home plus get all the benefits of plant juice. YOU ARE WELCOME!!

Warm & Cozy Linen/Room Spray

8 drops Thieves eo

6 drops Orange eo

6 drops Stress Away eo

Splash of unscented witch hazel or unflavored vodka

Top with distilled water in a 2 oz spray bottle

Use this spray to spritz your furniture before company comes over for a fresh and cozy scent in your home!

*You can also make any diffuser blend into a room spray. Simply double the drops of oil from the diffuser blends above into a 2 ounce spray bottle, add a splash of unscented witch hazel or unflavored vodka, and top with distilled water.

Pumpkin Pie Sugar Scrub

Perfect for when the air starts to cool and our skin starts to dry. It’s also a great gift that you can whip up at a moment’s notice!

½ cup white sugar

½ cup brown sugar

4 tbsp of coconut oil (until desired consistency)

1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice

2 drops orange eo

1 drop cinnamon bark eo

1 drop clove eo

1 drop nutmeg eo

Mix all ingredients in a glass bowl with a wooden spoon. You can also just use all white sugar versus half being brown sugar. Store in a mason jar or glass jar up to a few months, in a cool, dark place. Full disclosure, I totally took a taste of this (since everything is edible) and it's delicious.

Pumpkin Face Mask

Pumpkin puree is great for our skin with so many vitamins and fruit enzymes that help the skin become brighter and smoother! This is so fun for a nice night in and some self-pampering. Copaiba essential oil is known to be a skin soother and orange essential oil can help brighten your complexion, plus help with oiliness.

4 tbsp pumpkin puree

4 tbsp raw honey

8 drops copaiba eo

4 drops orange eo

Mix and store in a mason jar! I would store in the fridge to be safe. To use, simply spread a small amount on your face and neck. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then wash off!

Since it has a citrus oil in it, which is photosensitive, be careful not to go in the sun immediately after use. Best to use it at night!

Pumpkin Spice Creamer & Syrup

In a blender combine:

⅔ cup pumpkin puree

1 ½ cup nutpods or almondmilk

2 tbsp maple syrup (or more if you prefer it sweeter!)

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 drop cinnamon bark vitality

1 drop clove vitality

1 drop nutmeg vitality

Add to your hot or iced coffee to your liking! Stir well.

To make a syrup, bring to a simmer ½ cup pumpkin puree, ¾ cup water, and ¾ cup sugar (your choice on the type) for 3 minutes. Let cool and add the same essential oils as above and vanilla extract!

You can use this to make a latte, using either a shot of espresso with milk or just coffee and milk!
